Asparagus season has begun again. The queen of vegetables is once again available in abundance. Boiled asparagus is the obvious choice, but did you know that there are several other techniques for preparing asparagus? We have listed them for you below.
Cooking asparagus
It is ideal to use a tall pot to cook asparagus so that the heads of asparagus are above the water during cooking. This way the heads are steamed and the harder, woody parts are cooked in the water. Add salt and butter to the boiling water to add flavor to the asparagus.
Asparagus is best when cooked al dente. Don't cook it too long or it will become limp and stringy. Perfectly cooked asparagus also has much more flavor.
Tip: To check if asparagus is cooked properly, hold the tip of the asparagus between your thumb and forefinger and squeeze lightly. Perfectly cooked asparagus will release easily without being mushy.
Preparation time:
White asparagus - depending on its thickness - 5 to 6 minutes
Green asparagus - depending on thickness - 3 to 5 minutes

Frying asparagus
Frying gives the asparagus a nutty flavour. Peel the asparagus well. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a fat, such as peanut oil or a little butter. Once the foam from the butter has dissipated or before the oil starts to smoke, reduce the heat slightly and add the asparagus to the pan. Fry until nicely golden.
Tip: add a little water and continue cooking the asparagus with the lid on. This will speed up the cooking process without burning it.
