Wood is a living material that is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. The wooden handle of Opinel knives can expand due to these changes, making it difficult to open the blade. If you have not used your Opinel for a long time, the blade can also get stuck in the handle. Below are some tips on how to free the blade...

If you can't open an Opinel, try the Coup du Savoyard®, a method of opening a knife that has been passed down from generation to generation:
1) Turn the safety ring to release the blade.
2) Hold the knife by the handle: The safety ring is located in the palm of your hand, the blade faces down and should not be covered by your fingers.
3) Tap hard on a hard surface (such as a table, but avoid fragile surfaces that could be damaged).
4) After a subsequent tap, the blade will release and open easily.
5) With this simple procedure, you can release even the most difficult-to-open Opinel knife.
If the blade still has difficulty opening or closing, first make sure the knife handle is dry. Then apply a drop of mineral oil for knife maintenance above the groove and move the blade open and close several times. If necessary, apply more oil and wipe off the excess. For proper care, be sure to follow these guidelines:
- do not store the knife in a humid environment,
- After using the knife, wipe the blade with a soft cloth.
